Sunuppers History
Now known as Sunuppers, our club was originally called the Safeway Sundowners and was chartered as a community club on Dec. 27, 1976 in Bellevue and met on Tuesdays at 4:30pm. Over the years membership declined and eventually this club became inactive in Nov. of 1984. Later that same year the club name was changed to Sunuppers. It was changed to an advanced club as there wasn't one in the south end of Seattle. The club began to meet at the Double Tree Inn in Tukwilla. In 1994 the club moved it's meeting location to Thrifty headquarters. The club met at Thrifty's until late 2002 where the location was changed to it's current home at the Wesley Homes Administration building in Des Moines (directly across from Des Moines City Hall). Here's a link to a map of our location
In July of 1996 an annual famous speakers event was started which continues to this day where members showcase, sometimes in costume, famous speakers or people throughout history, such as John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln or Mohandas Ghandi. The annual event is both entertaining and educational. In 2005 this event changed to February due to district and other scheduling conflicts during the summer.
